8031 – Away in a Manger

W.J. Kirkpatrick (1685 – 1750)

Arranged by Roger Harvey

Difficulty: Easy

Price: £20.00

Programme notes:

This favourite amongst all Nativity verses was first published in an American Evangelical Lutheran album. From a number a superb settings, this one by Kirkpatrick, an American church musician, is undoubtedly the best known in Britain.

Performance notes:

The 2nd trumpet has the primary line in the introductory music; be careful that the 1st trumpet part simply colours and does not obscure. Take care over phrasing; making sure that breaths are taken under control and that final notes of phrases are tidy. The 2nd verse, bar 25 onwards, should be warm and rich in sound but not overblown at all. If the 1st trumpet player has difficulty playing in the upper octave under control, this part and the 2nd trumpet part can be omitted for bars 25-29 and 33-37. The glockenspiel part is optional.
