Programme note:

"Wie Schön Leuchtet der Morgenstern," - "How Beautifully Shines the Morning Star," was composed by Philipp Nicolai in the late 16th century and was used frequently as a chorale theme in the cantatas later Baroque composers, most notably J. S. Bach who set it several times as well as basing the whole of his early cantata BWV1 on it. Nicolai, a German Lutheran pastor write the hymn during a time of great turmoil: political unrest leading to the 30 Years War andand the devastation of the Black Plague. Nicolai's text reflects themes of spiritual enlightenment, the coming of Christ, and the promise of a brighter future in the hope of providing solace and inspiration to his congregation.
