Programme note:

Of the Father’s Heart Begotten has a text dating back to 4th Century. Corde natus was written by Marcus Aurelius Prudentius Clemensas, known also as Prudentius, and is found in a Spanish collection of poetry known as Liber Cathemerinon, a collection of odes based on stories from Scripture to be read and contemplated. During the Middle ages extracts from his works were used to create liturgical pieces. This hymn was translated into English by John Mason Neale for the Thomas Helmore's Hymnal Noted of 1851. Other alternative translations have been used since. The melody, Divinum Mysterium, is known from manuscripts as early as the 10th century. It was widely adapted in later times and first appeared in print in the Finnish Piae Cantiones of 1582. The original text to the chant was replaced with Prudentius's verse in Helmore's 1851 publication.

Performance note: Play with a light, dance-like style. The repeated rhythm, mlostly in the horn should provide drive but in a subtle, background manner. Any longer notes should be clearly presented but then reduced to privide some harmonic feel but without covering the moving parts. The trombone should be most prominent in the first half of the 2nd verse. The melody passes between voices in the final section so ensure that it is always evident in the balance.
