5049 - Psalm 21

Caesar Cui (1835-1918)

arranged for brass quintet by Roger Harvey

Difficulty: Easy

Price: £15.00

Programme note:

Caesar Cui was born in Lithuania and moved to St Peterburg to study Engineering at the age of 17. He rose through the ranks of the Russian Imperial Army and was a noted expert in the field of fortifications. He had started to learn the piano and to compose as a boy and outside of his military academic life he was heavily involved in the lively musical scene of St Petersburg, notably as a member of The Five who espoused nationalist Russian trends in contemporary music.
His large output includes songs, chamber music and a number of operas.

His Opus 80 is a setting of 3 Psalms written in 1910 for mixed chorus.

Performance note:

Take a contolled, steady tempo but keep a feeling of gently moving forward, avoiding too much hesitation at the frequent cadences.
Play with gentle articulation and cantabile phrasing.
