20021 - Little Suite

Witold Lutoslawski

arranged for symphonic brass by Roger Harvey

Difficulty: Medium

Price: £40.00

Programme note:

Lutoslawski's Symphony No 1 of 1947 had been received with reservations about its modern style. Rather than abandoning his aesthetic ideas, he used the next years to write music generally of a lighter, simpler style that was more functional and less open to artistic criticism which helped him develop the characteristic precision and clarity of musical expression so much evident in his subsequent musical style. The Little Suite was commissioned by Polish Radio in Warsaw in 1950 and is based on popular Polish folk tunes. It was originally conceived for chamber orchestra but was orchestrated for symphonic performance the following year. Although charming in its own right it can also be seen as a sort of technical exercise for later folk-influenced pieces such as the Concerto for Orchestra of 1954. The 4 movements are Fife, Hurra Polka, Song and Dance.
This arrangement is awaiting a licence from the Lutoslawski estate.
