Although he began his musical career as a church organist, Delibes was drawn to the theatre were he achieved great success, firstly by writing light operettas and then as Chorus Master at Theatre – Lyrique and the Opera in Paris. E wrote some very successful opera and ballet scores, the best known being Copelia (1870).
