12012 – Fanfare and Calypso

Dan Jenkins

for 12 trombones

Difficulty: Medium

Price: £20

Programme notes:

Fanfare and Calypso was originally written for a trombone course at Dartington School of Music under the auspices of Bone Lab. In this form it was for 18 players. This reduced version for 12 players was made at the request of Trinity College of Music trombone Choir for a concert in May 2003.

The piece consists of a Fanfare which functions as introduction and coda, and a rhythmic dance which forms the main part of the piece. The direct Calypso type theme of this main section is contrasted with a chorale and some more intricate rhythmic textures.

Performance notes:

Make the fanfare bright and positive but without becoming aggressive.

Keep the calypso rhythm pointed and bouncy at all times.

Balance the chorale carefully; particularly when the answering phrases overlap and harmonic clashes occur.
