The funeral of Queen Mary took place at Westminster Abbey in March 1695 and music for the occasion was provided by a number of composers, but mostly Purcell and Thomas Morley. This version includes Purcell's instrumental March and Canzona, later used theatrically as incidental music in 'The Libertine' by Shadwell and 3 of the vocal pieces. Thou Knowest Lord was performed shortly after this occasion at Purcell's own funeral. The other march included here, The Queen's Farewell, is by Thomas Tollett, little known today but a busy composer of theatrical music in London in the last decades of 17th Century.

Performance note:

This suite is arranged for 2 groups of players: 2 trumpets and 2 trombones play the Marches and Canzona; the remainder play the vocal transcriptions. They play together only for the the first part of the reprise of the March. If this ensemble verse is not desired the March can be repeated without the 'vocal' ensemble. The 2 groups may be placed apart, perhaps with the quartet standing, or approaching/recessing during the Marches. The drum (which can be doubled if possible) is desirable but if one is not available omit the solo bars. The vocal ensemble should use flugels if possible to give a distinctively different colour between the groups. In general play everything in a cantabile style but be sure to point the phrases clearly, gently mark any rhythmic features, and allow some dynamic nuance to avoid becoming expressionless. All markings are editorial and can be adjusted as desired.
