10122 - Eine Kleine Nachtmusik - Serenade K525

W. A. Mozart

arranged for 10-piece brass ensemble by Roger Harvey

Difficulty: Advanced

Price: £35.00

Programme note:

1. Allegro
2. Romanze
3. Menuetto
4. Rondo

Programme note: This serenade, written for string orchestra in 1787, is one of Mozart's most popular works. Athough there is no evidence as to why he wrote it, it is likely it was written for a commission, as with most of his serenades. It is almost a symphony in that there are 4 movements, an opening allegro, a slow movement entitled Romanza, a minuet and a closing rondo. Mozrt's own catalogue mentions a 5th movement and some research has been done to attempt to discover and reinstate it.

Performance note:

In general play in a light style. Sustain in the obvious places but even here keep the phrasing flexible, avoiding over-projected tone. Otherwise articulate cleanly and precisely but with great delicacy. Ensure that the accompaniment figures are always very well controlled and supportive but subsidiary, particularly in the lower voices and especially in the last movement, where a very light double tongue is required. The 1st trumpet part is for an E flat or piccolo. 4th trumpet is flugel throughout. 3rd trumpet is ideally flugel for the first 2 movements.
