10013 – Concert Etude

Alexander Goedicke (1877-1957)

Arranged by Roger Harvey

Difficulty: Medium (trb Virtuoso)

Price: £22.50

Programme notes:

There is a strong tradition of brass playing, solo, ensemble and orchestral in Russia. Consider the wonderful brass writing in the orchestral music of Tchaikowsky, Rimsky-Korsakoff, Stravinsky, Shostakovitch, etc. Much of the early brass ensemble repertoire comes from the region and many composers of greater or lesser repute wrote pieces for the solo repertoire of Russian performers. Alexander Goedicke was a pianist and composer. He was professor of piano at the Moscow Conservatory from 1903. As a composer his large output contains several operas, 3 symphonies and much chamber music. This showpiece has become a favourite with trumpet players in its original version for trumpet and piano.

Performance notes:

Choose the tempo wisely. The accompaniment must be light at all times. Any over-heavy articulation or dynamics will prevent the music from training momentum and style. Think in a leggiero two-in-a-bar and generally play through the phrases avoiding emphasis of individual notes.
